The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called on politicians to follow the law in resolving any grievances that may arise during electioneering period.
Addressing the press in Limuru during a sensitisation campaign for peaceful elections, NCCK’s secretary general Rev Canon Peter Karanja said the constitution provides procedures on how elections can be managed.
“Elections are a constitutional matter housed in the laws of the land and there are clear guidelines on how they should be managed,” said Karanja, Monday.
“We appreciate that there could be grievances but we urge that it is imperative that contestants in the elections only follow the law,” he added.
Karanja assured Kenyans that the churches would play a key role in ensuring the 207/2008 post-election violence is not repeated by preaching peace messages across the country.
“We must not have a repeat of 2007/2008 because this country cannot afford that kind of a situation again and we are committed to use all our structure across the country to pass this message,” he noted.
The sensitisation campaign was organised by the ecumenical consortium of Christian denominations.
