The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) commissioner Dr.Roba Sharamo has urged the 14 members ‘handshake’ committee to come up with a robust framework that will ensure meaningful reconciliation in the country.
Speaking in Garissa during an interfaith workshop, Dr.Sharamo asked the political class to tone down their rhetoric that continues to divide the country and raise political temperatures that threaten the harmony that has been witnessed since the infamous handshake.
He said the framework should also be able to address other structural issues that continue to divide Kenyans particularly on how to manage ‘our politics’.
“If there areas in the constitution that need to be reviewed should be done without bias, politics or political seats in mind.
Let’s see where the constitution has served and made the lives of Kenyans better and if there are areas of reforms that should be looked at should be holistically,” Dr.Sharamo said.
“We have implemented a robust devolution that has changed the lives of Kenyans across the country, however, there are areas that we have not done well that has led to wastages and must be looked at,” he added.
The commissioner said that Kenya should borrow a leaf from the neighboring Rwanda where the speaker of the National Assembly or the Senate does not necessarily come from the ruling party as one way of promoting inclusivity.
He said we should do away with politics that threaten to ‘tear’ the country’s fabric of the state during and immediately after every electioneering period circle.
Dr. Sharamo added that as a commission they would want to strengthen interfaith institutions and have a regular recap that renews their commitments and re-energize them to work with government officials in order to bring people together.
