The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) will partner with the Nakuru County government to sustain youths, women and elders peace forums.
This is as a way of tackling any conflicts arising before national elections.
Speaking from Nakuru County Deputy Governor’s office, NCIC’s Vice Chairperson Irene Wanyoike has said that the use of such organised forums has proved to be a major way of dealing with conflicts arising from politics, land and other matters.
While presenting a report on a survey carried on peace status in Nakuru County, Wanyoike noted that peace is a continuous process thus the need to keep monitoring it especially in Nakuru County which is cosmopolitan.
“The use of ex-service men and women in the Nyumba Kumi project should be introduced and embraced as a peace measure,” said Wanyoike.
Nakuru county Deputy Governor Joseph Ruto embraced NCIC’s move terming it an important tool towards reconciliation.
“Land issue is still a major challenge in peace building in the county and this move of the commission to partner with the county government in facilitating officers in peace and reconciliation process especially in areas of Narasha and Maai-Mahiu in Naivasha will help a great deal,”said Ruto.
Ruto added that the Nakuru County executive are working on equitable resource sharing as a peace building agent.
Linda Ochiel, a commissioner with the NCIC also called on the county government to have a peace budget through the directorate of peace.
She noted that Mau evictees and other internal IDPs should also get trauma counselling through a partnership that the commission will organise with the county government.
