The National cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) will work with the county government of Nakuru in organizing youth, women and elders peace forums before general elections, with the aim of preventing any election-related conflicts.
NCIC vice chairperson Irene Wanyoike said that peace forums are the best way of resolving land and election related disputes among different factions, something she said has worked in other regions.
Speaking Tuesday when she presented a peace status report about Nakuru County to the Deputy Governor Joseph Ruto at his office, Wanyoike said that Nakuru needs more peace forums considering its cosmopolitan setup.
“Nakuru is among the few counties which houses people from all tribes and this makes it prone to conflicts, which result from elections or resource sharing, but if people can be brought together through peace forums, then some of the conflicts being witnessed in Nakuru especially on resource sharing can be avoided,” she said
Deputy Governor Joseph Ruto thanked NCIC for its efforts to bring peace in the County, and promised that his government will work with NCIC as they try to find permanent solutions to the problems facing the county.
“Land remains the biggest problem in the county and most conflicts being reported in the county arise from land but the county government is doing all it can with the help of your commission to find a permanent solution to the problem of land among different communities living in Nakuru County and especially in Naivasha, Kuresoi and Molo,” said Ruto.
