The county government of Samburu has clashed with the National Cereals and Produce board (NCPB) after rejecting 8000 bags of maize supplied by NCPB meant for hunger victims.
The county governmnet has calimed that the maize is unfit for human consumption.
NCPB has however dismissed the claims saying the 8,000 bags of maize bought by the county government last month was tested and analyzed for safety.
The maize purchased at Sh11.5 million in early October has been lying at the Maralal cereals depot uncollected for six weeks.
“NCPB had looked at the maize in the stores and it did not have components of Aflatoxin a poisonous substance found in maize stored with moisture, This Maize is good and there is no cause for alarm” said NCPB managing director Newton Terer who had visited the Maralal depot on Friday.
Terer said the board only learned about the county government’s verdict through media reports.
