Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has asked the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to make payments to maize farmers on time.

Speaking when he visited NCPB depot in Mosoriot on Thursday, the Senator said there was the need for the funds to be promptly released so as to enable farmers to pay for their children's school fees and prepare early for the coming planting season.

"Schools are opening and most farmers need to utilize the funds to take their children to school, a majority of maize farmers also want to prepare their farms on time for the planting season, NCPB must make payments on time so as not to affect the operations of farmers," Cherargei said.

The Jubilee allied Senator further said leaders in the region and pushing to ensure sufficient funds are available to pay farmers who have delivered their produce at the cereals board across the country.

"We are striving to ensure that funds are made available, we do not anticipate delays on payments to farmers for produce supplied to the NCPB," he noted.

Farmers, especially from the North Rift region, have been up in arms over delays in payment for the produce they have already delivered estimated to be at sh2 billion so far.
