Kisumu East Member of Parliament (MP) Shakeel Shabir has urged students from poor backgrounds to apply for bursaries, to help them pay for school fees.
Addressing members of the public at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground in Kisumu Wednesday, the MP said bursary forms are available at the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) offices. He urged parents who are not in a position to pay school fees for their children to take the initiative and apply for bursaries.
He said every child in this country has a right to education, and no one should be discriminated upon because of lack of school fees.
“The reason those CDF funds are there is because they are your funds. In my constituency, we normally get between Sh 85 Million and Sh 90 million which is usable and out of that, we normally allocate Sh 25 million for bursaries,” he said.
The MP said those who do not register good grades in national exams in Primary and Secondary Schools’ level, should join Youth Polytechnics to acquire technical skills instead of sitting idle.
He insisted on the need of education stake holders in country, joining hands towards improving performance in national exams and the sector in general.
