Sporting activities have been affected by neglect at the Githunguri stadium where some of the installations have been stolen.
The stadium has also been turned into a drug den where the youth spend their time, exploring various substances.
According to Mary Kariuki, a businesswoman operating next to the stadium, the youths gather in groups before consuming the drugs.
“All kinds of drugs are being taken at the stadium. Young people come in groups and sit at strategic places where they either drink or smoke bhang from,” she said.
Kariuki said the numbers keep growing and the place is becoming dangerous. She noted that instead of the stadium helping young people discover and nurture their talents, it is instead ironically ruining their lives.
In a past interview, Githunguri MP Njoroge Baiya acknowledged that many young people in the constituency are jobless and are ending up consuming illicit brews and indulging in drug abuse.
The legislator urged the youths to exploit the Women, Uwezo and Youth Enterprise funds and low interest loans from financial institutions to help invest in different areas.
Githunguri sub-county engineer Humphrey Kamau clarified that the neglected structures within the stadium belong to different political parties and different groups who are accountable for their renovation.
He added that he is aware of the iron sheets which are temporarily fencing the stadium being vandalised and said that a block perimeter wall will be erected around the arena.
