Politicians in Kiambu County have been challenged to educate residents on the importance of stopping the use of banned plastic bags.
Kiambu County NEMA director Stephen Kimutu said leaders who meet supporters should ask them to stop using the bags for the sake of conserving the environment.
Kimutu said use of plastic bags is high in Limuru Sub County.
“Leaders meeting their supporters in churches and other political gatherings should help us educate locals to stop using the banned plastic bags as this will help conserve the environment,” he said.
The director vowed that NEMA will not stop war on plastic bags anytime soon.
"We will not step down in war to end use of illegal bags in the region. Handlers will be arrested and prosecuted in a court of law despite the fact that traders selling the banned bags have been threatening to attack NEMA officials while at work,” he stated.
Kimutu was speaking on Tuesday in Limuru town.
