The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on Friday conducted a clean-up exercise that saw hundreds of volunteers collect litter and unblock drainage systems in Kidiwa, Shauri Moyo and Huruma estates in the outskirts of Eldoret town.
The exercise was meant to mark the 'Clean up the World Week' that is celebrated across the world annually.
Addressing journalists during the event, NEMA Uasin Gishu County Director Boniface Birichi said the event will also be used to sensitise the public on the need to keep the environment clean.
"Apart from cleaning the estates, we are using this exercise to tell the locals that they have a sole responsibility of taking care of the environment by ensuring it is always clean for their own benefit," said Mr Birichi.
The NEMA County director asked locals to avoid littering which he said was the main cause of environmental pollution.
"People need to make good use of the litter bins provided by the county government and rental houses owners as this makes it easier to collect garbage,” he said.
