Kisii residents have accused NEMA and the county government of Kisii of allowing people to construct houses along the riverbank.
According to them, NEMA has failed on its mandate of conserving the environment which is essential for the health of residents.
Samuel Osoti from Mwembe in Kisii central ward he said that NEMA has failed in maintaining the environment.
“Our worry as the residents is how comes NEMA approvers someone who is building along riverbanks and further directs the sewage tunnels to the river,” questioned osoti
“We need to be told which criteria they are using in the approvals since the residents who are living around the areas are getting affected with the waste from those buildings, “added osoti
He also said that once the construction starts after the approval from NEMA no one comes back to monitor what is happening and urged the management which is led by Director Samson Bokea to make sure that they monitor the constructions.
“We need NEMA to work by their mandate so that we can get a friendly environment,” added Osoti.
