The National Environment Management Authority, (NEMA) in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a joint exercise meant to cleaning highways in the North Rift region.
This follows increased litter along the highways that is thrown by commuters.
According to North Rift NEMA Director Baraza Wangwe, the exercise is meant to not only clean the highway but also curb cases of passengers littering.
Speaking in Eldoret, Sunday, Wangwe warned that anybody who will be found throwing litter from a vehicle window will be fined at least sh5,000.
"We've noticed that our highways especially the Uganda road are very dirty and this prompted us to launch this initiative that will see all litter collected," noted Wangwe.
"But even as we will be collecting the litter, we have agreed with NTSA that any passenger who will be found littering will be arrested and fined," he added.
The NEMA director, however, said since the ban on plastic bags was implemented, the environment has been generally clean as Kenyans have fully embraced the use of non-plastic bags.
