Parliament has summoned the Environment Ministry and the National Environment and Management Authority (NEMA) after the two clashed on plans to ban the use and manufacture of plastic bottles.

National Assembly Environment and Natural Resources Committee chairman Kareke Mbiuki said they want to address the emerging differences between Environment Principal Secretary Charles Sunkuli and NEMA over the ban.

"We have heard conflicting statements from the ministry and its agency; we have therefore summoned them so as to get the official position on the ban," Mbiuki said.

Last week, NEMA board chairman, John Konchellah, announced that the authority was drafting a gazette notice that would see plastic bottles ban effected by April 30.

But on Wednesday, PS Sunkuli overruled the decision saying the government had no plans to ban the use and manufacture of plastic bottles.

Mbiuki, who is also the MP for Maara, said Parliament was not opposed to the ban but stakeholders must be involved.

"Bringing all stakeholders on board will ensure that we are all adequately informed about the move,” he said on Thursday.
