Speaking on Wednesday in Athi River the Chairman of NEMA in Machakos county Patrick Odhiambo stated that a letter had been issued to the Mavoko county council to temporarily close down the slaughter house until all the expectations are fulfilled.

"I instructed the Mavoko county council to ensure that the Athi River slaughter house is not opened until a sewerage exit is dug as its an environmental threat, " said Odhiambo.

Odhiambo further called upon the residents to work together with Nema in ensuring any environmental pollution is reported in a move to create a clean environment.

The people living around the slaughter house have previously complained about the blood and dirt from the slaughter house due to lack of a proper covered sewer output.

The residents have welcomed the move calling upon the County government of Machakos to pay the contractor so as to finish constructing the sewer.
