The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has revealed plans to launch a Highway cleaning exercise across the country.

The initiative is meant to ensure the country's highways are clean.

According to Uasin Gishu NEMA director Boniface Birichi, the clean-up exercise will be a partnership between the Authority, the Ministry of Environment and the National Youth Service (NYS).

Speaking on Friday at Huruma where he led a clean-up exercise, Birichi further warned motorists against littering.

He said NEMA will partner with the Traffic Police and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to ensure motorists who litter are arrested and prosecuted.

"It's a criminal offense to litter on the highways and we will partner with NTSA and Police to enhance surveillance and ensure the habit of commuters throwing litter through the vehicle windows comes to an end,” said Birichi.

"All we are interested in is to keep our highways clean," he added.
