Mr Maraga, 65 was sworn on Wednesday as the replacement of retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga who opted for an early retirement mid-2016.

And the renowned political scientist Nyachieo Bogonko seemed to dismiss Maraga’s new job questioning his record as a lawyer during the ‘dark’ days in the country experienced in the 70s and 80s.

“I don’t discredit him because he is qualified but I have doubts about his ability to reform the judiciary which has been marred by corruption and much negativity in the past,” he said.

Bogonko added: “During the dark ages in the country lawyers such as Paul Muite, James Orengo, Gitobu Imanyara stood for the rights of weak Kenyans and even gave people pro bonos. I, however, didn’t see Maraga despite belonging to that era.”

He said history was indispensable on people’s past and present insisting that Maraga should have hit the public limelight in the dark period.

“I only knew about him during the infamous radical surgery that saw several people lose jobs in 2003. I have doubt whether he will have an impact given his mysterious past,” he said.
