The curriculum set to replace the 8-4-4 system will begin its roll out come the second term. The curriculum will first focus on training pre-primary and lower primary teachers.
The curriculum will see a comeback of the mother tongue being taught as well as Art and Craft. Although these subjects were taught earlier but later banned in 2001 due to inadequate teaching personnel and resources, the government wishes to reintroduce them in lower primary. Other subjects are literacy, Kiswahili, English and indigenous language activities, Math’s for day-to-day living, Environmental activities (Science, Social and Agriculture) hygiene and nutrition, moral, religious and life skills activities.
This will be a good move in Kenya’s education system which mostly focuses on grade to identify a child’s capability and ignores talent and passion.
A flexible curriculum that incorporates both talent and instinctual ability will be of benefit to our generations to come as it will eradicate unemployment and reliance thus embracing creativity and randomness in the youthful minds of those in school as well as employment and businesses.
