An initiative seeking to enable teachers have access to low interest loans has been launched.
The initiative, 'Mwalimu Digital' will provide teachers with the opportunity to get access to low interest and friendly loans to enable them acquire a modern computers.
The investment was mooted by Mwalimu National, a sacco that brings together Kenyan teachers.
The sacco targets at improving the livelihoods of Kenyan teachers.
“The campaign will support government’s efforts on Digital Literacy Project,” Mwalimu National Sacco Chief Executive Officer, Robert Shibutse said on Wednesday during the launch in Nairobi.
The program is expected to complement the Teacher Service Commission’s Digital transformation of schools.
“The programme we are launching today will enable Mwalimu National complement the government’s efforts on Digital Literacy Project by reducing affordability barriers for teachers in Kenya to acquire their own devices and become digital professionals,” Mr Shibutse added.
Under the program, sacco members will enjoy discounted prices on a number of Lenovo laptops starting from Sh27,995 and the 2in1 TECNO Winpad 10 at Sh26,995.
In addition, they will have access to loans from the sacco with monthly repayments that start as low as Sh1019.
The laptops will also come bundled with free Microsoft Office 365 for one year, extended warranties, and digital teacher content from Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
The Lenovo laptops’ offer will be exclusively available at Nakumatt Supermarkets countrywide while the TECNO Winpad 10 offer will only be available at Safaricom shops countrywide.
To access the offers, Mwalimu National Sacco members will be required to get in touch with the Sacco offices countrywide.
Mwalimu National is the largest Sacco in Africa with over 70,000 members.
It draws membership from employees of the Teachers’ Service Commission in post primary institutions, TSC secretariat and Mwalimu Sacco staff.
