The county government of Kisumu has allocated Sh3 million for the completion of Nyitienge Health Centre in Kisumu West constituency to address matters of health care.
Residents led by a midwife, Caren Awino hailed the county government for coming to their aid mostly women who are pregnant.
Ms Awino said in the past, women who experience complications in their pregnancy had to travel long distance to seek for medical attention.
“Most women hail from poor families, now look, you are pregnant and not able to afford cash for transport, you have to trek 10 kilometres to reach the nearest hospital,” she said.
Awino said as a midwife she will gain a lot in the programme where the county health department is incorporating midwives into their operations.
“With this health centre here, I know I will be trained on how to carry out my work in a more professional way,” she said.
The construction was started during the defunct Local Authorities under the Local Authority Service Delivery Action Plan (LASDAP) but stalled.
South West Kisumu ward representative Joseph Abiola said the county has given the money for the completion of the health centre.
Abiola said a contractor has been identified and will be on site very soon.
Speaking on Monday when he visited the site with the contractor, Abiola said that he is determined that the health centre is completed and up running before the next general election.
Another resident John Otieno narrated how they lost a pregnant woman who was bleeding and had to be rushed to Kisumu, about 100 kilometers away.
“Just a week ago we lost a mother, if this health centre was here we could have saved the situation. I know such death will now not occur if the health care is functioning,” he said.
