The entrance of the newly formed Democratic Congress to Cord strongholds may jeopardise efforts of the opposition to keep the vote-rich Nyanza region intact, a political analyst has said.
Democratic Congress, which was registered recently by Mr Tom Mboya Jnr, brother to Susan Kidero, the Nairobi governor’s wife, is believed to be the vehicle that Dr Evans Kidero might use to challenge Mr Raila Odinga as a de facto leader of Nyanza.
Speaking to Hivisasa.com during an interview on Sunday, Prof Soloveo Bogonko of Kisii University said the party is rapidly recruiting members at Nyamira and Kisii counties before it eventually goes to Luo Nyanza.
“The officials are using a systematic strategy. They have entered the Gusii region where Cord has a substantial support before going to Luo Nyanza. Their strategy seems to be working because they are using the youth agenda to drive their point home,” he said.
Bogonko said the tactic of using the youth by promising party positions may even lead to mass exodus from ODM since most of the ODM officials were politicians at an advanced age.
“I am seems a possible exodus of people from the orange party because the new party is reportedly promising youths leadership positions unlike in ODM. Cord must find a strategy to fight back or lose the game,” said the professor of history.
Speaking separately on Sunday at Kebirigo, former Nyamira County majority leader Beattah Omanga fired a warning to ODM county leadership by urging them to change tact.
“If the party continues executing its responsibilities recklessly by intimidating members, then I am sensing a revolution. People will definitely switch to where their views are accommodated,” he said.
