Nakuru County Director of Environment Murithi Kiongozi has said that the county government was working on new sustainable plans that will save the local natural environment from disasters during both dry and wet seasons.
While talking to this writer in his office on Thursday in response to a wide spread fire incidences in local natural environments, the director said that his office was working on a new environmental disaster management policy, which will be tabled in the County Assembly to be passed into law.
He noted that many environmental disasters can be prevented, if there exists comprehensive policies and laws that enable proper management of natural environment sites.
“Some of these disasters can be prevented if the government puts in place sustainable laws and policies to help in the management of natural resources. We are working on new plans that will be turned into policies and tabled in the local assembly to help craft a sustainable disaster management programme,” said Muriithi.
According to the director, the new plan will involve among others, totally banning intruders inside protected areas during dry seasons, fencing off and enhancing security, educating members of local communities on conservation and disaster management, and allocating more resources to disaster management departments.
