Jubilee’s Uhuru Kenyatta and his closest rival Raila Odinga (NASA) have received an alluring favour to lobby for their individual policies during the July presidential debate.Organisers of the presidential debate set for July 10 and July 24 now say only candidates with at least five percent support in two national polls carried out by reputable research firms will be considered in the main debate.The new measures are to guard against a crowded debate that may not offer Kenyans a chance to interrogate what the candidates stand for.As statistics stand now, only President Kenyatta and NASA’s Raila Odinga are sure to be part of the debate.However, former Lenana High School teacher Mohamed Abduba Dida, who contested unsuccessfully in 2013 may be the third entrant after an Ipsos poll showed he was the past five per cent popularity on May 30.Thirdway Alliance Kenya leader Ekuru Aukot, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo (UDP); and independent candidates Michael Wainaina, Japhet Kavinga Kaluyu, and former Cooperatives minister Joseph Nyagah may fall victims of the new guidelines as they seek to oust President Kenyatta.
