Governor Kidero has signed into law a City Hall bill that requires pet owners to pay for license to hold them within their households, failure to which they will part with a hefty fine of Sh5 000 or face two months in jail.
The Act further provides that dogs that bark for more than six minutes in an hour will see their owners slapped with a similar fine for causing public disturbance.
Within a time frame of thirty minutes, a dog within the city county is not allowed to make any noise for more than 180 seconds, and not more than 360 consecutive seconds in an hour.
The dog permit will now cost Sh2 000 annually, with an additional Sh1 000 for a more special collar bearing the pet's license number together with an inscription of the owner's name and physical address.
The collar should be worn by the pet dog at all times.
"No single person shall own or keep any dog aged six months and above within Nairobi City County. Unless such an individual is in possession of a branded license for the pet dog issued under this Act," read the City County Dog Control and Welfare Act 2016.
Before any license is issued for either a cat or a dog, pet owners should have fully satisfied the conditions that include well fenced premises to ensure that the dogs do not stray.
