Juja town houses several businesses.
It also houses one of the major university in Kenya, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
The major occupants of the town are students drawn from all over the country. The businesses around, therefore have their target market as the students.
But there is this one business that is prominent: use of hired mountain bike for travel. It has had a very good reception by the students.
The business has either been started by students or non-students who consider that the university expansive nature is necessitating their use.
This is because the bicycles will enable students to reach their destination very easily.
Lecture rooms within the university are far apart and walking normally takes a long time and use of these bikes can help the students especially to reach the lecture halls with ease.
Hiring these bicycles has enabled students also exercise.
Another reason why this business might flourish is because no motorcycle or normal bicycles are allowed within the university premises.
The furthest in most cases they can reach is the main school gate and not further unless on specialised operations.
This means that since the mountain bikes are used by students, they have an unlimited access. They can move to whichever location.
The mountain bike business normally hires out the bicycles at a rather cheaper price, which is Sh50 per hour and Sh1 per minute as compared to a motorcycle who charge Sh50 for a very short distance. As for the normal bicycles, they normally charge between Sh20 to Sh50 depending on the distance covered.
Being very pocket-friendly, there is a possibility that should the business gain stability, there is a possibility that the students will prefer to hire the mountain bikes and use them to travel for even very long distances that they could have spent even much money.
