Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia have filed a protest letter to the league organizer over what they termed as a 'shambolic' award ceremony that saw them leave empty handed despite staging a spirited campaign for the 2017 league title.
The awards which were held on Saturday evening in Nairobi saw Zoo Kericho's Michael Madoya bag four accolades including the Most Valuable Player (MVP) much to the chagrin of the reigning champions who questioned the criteria which was used to fete players and other stakeholders.
According to K'ogalo secretary general Ronald Ngala, the manner in which the awards were given out is unclear and quite off the mark as Madoya's Zoo largely struggled and were unconvincing after finishing twelfth on the log.
I do not know the system or criteria that was used to select the winners but the outcome shows that everything is completely wrong.Nk pun intended but how comes the MVP came from the team that struggled while there are teams, not necessarily Gor Mahia that could have been given the award," Ngala queried.
"Remember Tusker FC 2016.As a matter of fact,I have written to the KPL over the same. This has to stop,it is ridiculing real winners," he added.
Despite winning the league with several matches to spare and having some of the highest goal scorers, Gor could only manage the team manager of the year award which went to Jolawi Obondo.
