A family in Kisumu is mourning the death of their son, after he drowned on Sunday January 1, as people across the world welcomed the New Year.
The son, Calvins Odhiambo is said to have drowned while he enjoyed a swimming session with his friends on the shores of Lake Victoria.
According to reports, Odhiambo had accompanied five of his friends for an afternoon swim at the lake, before the whole exercise turned tragic.
“I proceeded into the lake to swim without knowing the other children were following me, when I came out, some of those who were at the shore told me one of the boys was still in the waters,” said one of the boys.
“We tried to find him but we could not locate him, we decided to go to Central Police station to report the matter, and were told to go home and come the following day with our parents,” he added.
However, the family of the boy and other relatives were unable to access the scene of the incident the following day, as it was wholly covered by hyacinth.
Recovery efforts were yet to commence by Tuesday evening, as the plant continued to cover the area, leaving relatives of the deceased with little to do to retrieve the body of the 12-year-old class five pupil.
Odhiambo, who is said to be a total orphan was to join class six when schools re-open for the first term of 2017.
