A newborn baby dumped in a pit latrine by its mother has been rescued and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Mandera Principal Chief Issack Adawa who confirmed the incident said the police were informed by the area residents that there was a baby dumped in a pit at Bula Power in Elwak town, Mandera County.

Mr. Adawa said a passer-by discovered the baby through its cries after the mother dumped the baby in a pit.

He said the passer-by informed the area residents and they managed to rescue the baby alive and rushed it to the hospital for medical attention.

“Members of public managed to rescue the baby who looked a day old and took it to Elwak Sub-County Referral Hospital for medication. The newborn baby is already recovering in the hospital” he said.

The chief said the police have launched an investigation into the incident as they seek to arrest the mother.

Members of the public have been urged to assist the police in arresting the woman.
