Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has asked residents to exercise caution as heavy rains continue to pound in the county.

Ngilu wants resident’s living close to river banks and areas likely to experience flooding to vacate immediately.

Ngilu on Friday said the Kitui County Government will be putting up temporary make shifts for locals living in areas likely to experience floods.

She said the government had established a special committee to coordinate with the Red Cross officials and other national government agencies to help victims of flooding.

‘‘Our appeal is to residents living close to river banks and hilly areas to vacate and move to safer grounds to avoid being swept by floods,’’ Ngilu said.

Ngilu cautioned locals and especially users of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) against traveling when it is raining.

‘‘We must all exercise great caution and save ourselves from calamities that are associated with heavy rainfall,’’ Ngilu said.

On Wednesday, three people were swept by floods and died in Mwingi East , Kitui County.

The three were in a lorry which was allegedly swept as they tried to cross River Enziu  on Thursday morning.

Their bodies were retrieved on Thursday evening by Red Cross officials.

Kitui is among counties across the country experiencing heavy downfall accompanied by flush floods.

On Friday morning, four bodies were retrieved at Kamulu-Joska bridge after they were swept  by flooding water in River Athi.

The weatherman says that heavy rains will continue pound over the weekend. The meteorological department has issued warning alerts and areas likely to experience flush floods.
