Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has asked residents and Kenyans to take sugarless tea following revelations of contraband sugar that are laced with mercury and copper in the market.
Ngilu also wants Kenyans to be wary of the products they consume as the government battles contraband products.
Speaking at Kabati Catholic Church in Kitui West on Sunday, Ngilu asked the government to take stern action on individuals and companies linked to importation of contraband products.
“These people are killing generations and they should not be shown any mercy at all,” Ngilu said.
Ngilu said the sale of contraband products is worse than murder, terrorism and even corruption.
The NARC governor said her administration will work with the national government in the fight against counterfeit products.
She called for immediate arrest of politicians who are behind the contraband sugar.
“Stern legal action must be taken against all those engaging in these illegal businesses that are putting Kenyans lives at risk,” Ngilu added.
On Saturday, police seized thousands of bags of contraband sugar in Matuu and Kitui towns as the government scales up the war on the substandard products.
Last week, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i revealed that imported contraband sugar has laces of mercury and copper.
Dagorreti North MP Simba Arati has also sensationally claimed that some politicians are behind the substandard sugar and products existing in the Kenyan market.
