Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has warned against the national government proposal to cut down on county funding saying it will cripple services in the counties.
Speaking at the Kitui Teachers Training College on Friday, Ngilu said that counties risk running broke should the government go ahead with the plan.
She noted that some counties get little funds and slashing the same will delay service delivery to Kenyans.
"The proposal is ill and spells doom in terms of service delivery in the counties", she said.
Ngilu said that some counties have not even paid February salaries, adding that the national government should seek the money elsewhere.
She claimed that devolution is under threat, adding that Kenyans must stand firm to protect it.
On Tuesday, National Teasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich revealed that the goverment plans to slash county budgets by Sh18 Billion.
The CS told the senate committee on Finance that the national government is facing cash crunch .
This comes as mixed reactions continue to emerge on claims that the government is broke.
On Thursday, Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary General Francis Atwoli blasted the national government, saying that its huge borrowing could sink the county into economic crisis.
Atwoli said that he had warned the Jubilee adminstration against excessive borrowing in 2015.
The Council of Governors (COG) has also criticised the plan by the national government to slash on county funding.
The Council Chairman Josphat Nanok on Thursday said that the national government has not consulted counties on the plan.
Nanok warned Treasury CS against making arbitrary decisions without consultations.
The COG boss also complained that the national government has not fully disbursed county allocations in the (2017-2018) ending in three months time, a situation that he said is threatening service delivery.
