Residents of Kitui County will receive 50 tonnes of green grams from the Kenya Red Cross as the October December rains are set to begin.

Speaking on Friday, Red Cross head of disaster risk management Elijah Muimi said that the organization is working with the county government under the leadership of Former Lands Minister Charity Kaluki Ngilu to ensure that the residents have enough seeds before the short rains kickoff. The officers were speaking at Ngilu’s office where he had paid her a courtesy call.

According to Muimi, the high quality certified seeds will improve farming in the region. On his part, Ngilu said agriculture is the backbone of the county’s economy, adding that she is committed to ensuring that the residents benefit from the same. She also said that she works with other leaders to ensure there is food security in the county.

“My key agenda is to ensure food security - dealing with the basics is the best formula and foundation towards improving the livelihood of our people,” she said as quoted by Star.

The county government has dug seven boreholes in partnership with the NGO. The county boss further thanked the NGO’s for the support they have accorded her administration. “We appreciate all efforts by partners towards ensuring our people get sufficient water. My government began the initiative on my inauguration day,” Ngilu said.
