Residents of Mwingi have asked the county government under the leadership of Former Lands Minister Charity Kaluki Ngilu now governor to collect plastic litter from the streets, Star has reported.
This comes after The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) banned the use of plastic bags in the wake to protect flora and fauna.
According to the residents, it does not make sense for the government to ban the use of plastic bags yet they are all over the area and nothing is being done towards the same.
The ban of plastic bag usage took effect on Monday with a heavy penalty imposed on those who will defy the directive from the authority put in place.
However, it has been established that a few residents are yet to comply with the ban.
To some of the residents, the ban on the use of plastic has opened new business opportunities which include selling of alternative packing material to the public.
NEMA Director General Geoffrey Wahungu has confirmed that several teams have been set to ensure Kenyans comply with the new directive.
“This is more of an awareness campaign that will last a week; we want to inspect how manufacturers, retailers, and businesses are implementing the ban,” Wahungu told Capital FM News.
