Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has received backing from Mwingi Central MP Dr Gideon Mulyungi over her orders to ban sand havesting and charcoal trade business in the county.
The MP who was speaking during the burial of an AP office Nicholas Muma Kilonzi, son of former MCA Kilonzo Maundu, who died while receiving treatment in Nairobi women's hospital, said that Kitui residents should not allow people from outside the county to course drought in the county since the government refused to help them in solving the drought manace.
“Let them leave our trees for us, because… even ourselves… we will not go to other regions to cut down trees. We already have shortage of rain in this area, so we cannot continue to allow people from outside to come in and cut down our trees and be on their way, leaving us in drought. I support the Governor’s move because even the Jubilee government has refused to help us,” said Dr Mulyungi.
Governor Ngilu was quoted saying in her vernacular that lorries caught ferrying charcoal in the county should be torched.
“If you see the lorries, torch them and call me,” Ngilu said.
Police in the county have since confirmed that one lorry has been torched in the county.
