Speaking to journalists in her office on Sunday, the governor said the cause of the fire must be established as soon as possible and action taken if it is linked to any foul play.

Ngilu said the inferno destroyed property worth millions of shillings, alleging there could be a foul play.

She said crucial documents were burnt in the inferno that took fire brigade hours to contain.

‘‘The  police must  speed up investigations and establish if  there was any  foul play in the Sunday morning's inferno that razed some of our county offices,’’ Ngilu said.

According to police detectives, the fire broke at 12 am on Sunday, destroying county offices housed at the former Tourist Hotel building.

The building housed county ministries of Environment and Natural Resources, Education and Sports and Youth Affairs.

Detective leading investigations said the fire started on the second floor of the building.

According to Kitui Central Deputy county commissioner Otieno Odidi, investigations to establish the cause of the fire is ongoing.

‘‘We will give a detailed report on the cause of the fire once investigations are complete,’’ he told journalists on Sunday.

The commissioner cautioned politicians against speculating on the possible cause of the inferno urging them to give detectives space to do their work.
