Kitui gubernatorial race has a surprise front-runner.

Former Lands CS Charity Ngilu is leading Senator David Musila and incumbent Julius Malombe.

By 4:30am, and with 48% of the cast votes counted, the Narc party leader had 73,658 votes (46.72%) followed by independent candidate David Musila who had 52,321 votes (33.18%. The county boss, Julius Malombe, was third with 31,694 votes (20.10%).

Her potential win will be a blow to Wiper party which is the dominant party in the region. Despite her support for NASA leader Raila Odinga, many expect a close contest where Senator David Musila should come third.

Musila ditched Wiper and chose to go for the gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate. Her accused Wiper party of holding unfair nominations. He also faulted party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for having preferred candidates in the primaries. This was the same reason that Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama pointed out when he chose not to defend his seat.
