The Kitui county government has embarked on a campaign to increase the tree cover in the region in a bid to conserve the environment.

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu’s deputy Dr. Wathe Nzau on Thursday led residents during the launch of the Annual Tree Planting season at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) in Kitui Rural Sub-county.

In his speech, the deputy government assured the residents that the county government is committed to ensuring that the environment is fully protected.

He also called upon the local residents to plant more trees. The second in command at the county level also revealed that Ngilu’s government will continue supporting the institution in various areas including research, education, internship, and environment.

SEKU Vice Chancellor Prof. Geoffrey Muluvi, who was present during the launch of the project, said that the institution of learning is ready to enter into meaningful partnerships with different agencies.

County Executive for Environment Mr. John Makau, the Environment Director Benjamin Mukulo and Chief Officer Dr. Mwinzi were among the high profile guests who attended the launch at SEKU.
