Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has partnered with the Kenya Red Cross in a bid to end food insecurity and eradicate high levels of poverty among the resident in the next five years of his governance following her win.
This is after the county government and the NGO unveiled Sh100 million Ndengu Revolution with the aim of improving the welfare of the people of this part of the nation in the next five years of her governance.
The main target of the program is to make the green grams one of the cash crops in the region as the new leadership looks forward to transforming the county into producing extra for exportation.
The program will see 400 tonnes supplied to the farmers in the area. Red Cross has also allocated Sh500 million towards the purchase of green grams. Speaking during the launch of the programme, the county boss expressed confidence that food security will be a thing of the past following the new move.
“We are walking towards kicking relief food out of Kitui. Never again shall our people sit for hours at a chief’s camps for portions from charitable organizations,” Ngilu told a crowd at the bus park. She also assured the local residents of a ready market upon production of surplus green grams.
