Former Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu has been reprieved after the court threw out criminal charges leveled against her over Sh 8 billion Karen land scam.
Ngilu, who is in the race to smoke out Kitui governor Dr Julius Malombe, has been accused of attempting to obstruct investigations into the land issue.
The former CS reached an agreement with state law office that was recorded in the presence of judges Alnashir Visram, Jamila Mohammed and Wanjiru Karanja.
The consent showed that the appeal Ngilu had tabled at the court was settled. The court reached an agreement to quash the criminal charges she was facing.
It was also stated that the former CS will not pursue any claim in regard to the matter in the office of the Attorney General (AG), Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) or the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
“In light of the EACC position and based on our own review of the matter we are prepared to reconsider our earlier decision to charge Charity Ngilu and to have the charges against her terminated,” reads the letter from DPP, as quoted by the Star.
The termination of the case against Ngilu is a major boost to her political career as she seeks to become the next governor of Kitui.
