Girls from Athi River town have been warned against conducting clandestine abortions.
The caution was issued by Bondeni Children Rescue Centre's director Florence Gitau who said the malpractice was apparently on the rise in the region.
Addressing the press at the orphanage on Friday, Gitau said several under age girls from the town were engaging in unsafe sex and end up aborting once they get pregnant.
"Let our teenage girls know that abortion is a crime, it is dangerous to their lives hence need to desist from the conducting unsafe abortions once they get pregnant," said Gitau.
Gitau said the malpractice was more rampant in slums like Sofia, Bondeni, City Carton, KMC, and Jua Kali all in Athi River town.
She said abortions had serious negative effects among the girls noting they can lead to loss of lives.
"It is not a secret that several girls including mature women have reportedly succumbed to unsuccessful abortions," said Gitau.
Gitau urged teenage girls from the region to take their studies seriously in school and follow teachings of the Holy Bible.
She advised girls to wait until they become of age and clear school before they get into intimate relationships.
