A nongovernmental organisation has started a programme to equip street children in Kamwangi with entrepreneurial skills to start a new life.

Integrated Education for Life, director Moses Karume said street families and children need the support of Kenyans to ensure they come out of drug and substance abuse, and become useful members of society.

Speaking at Munyaka shopping centre on Monday, Karume said it is important that the street children are equipped with life skills to enable them engage in meaningful activities.

“Due to the harsh living conditions in the streets, the youngsters are dabbling in drug abuse and petty crime such as muggings and stealing from motorists at the parking yards,” he said.

The nongovernmental organisation director urged Kenyans to help in rehabilitating and integrating street children into mainstream society.

“Integrated Education for Life is trying to empower the street children in this constituency through a program dubbed Geuza Chokosh, where the street children are being trained on small business activities and driving to earn a decent livelihood,” he said.

Karume said the NGO’s charitable entity is trying to rehabilitate the street children through various seminars on business and entrepreneurial development.

“Street children re-integration into the society is however hampered by lack of national identity cards which would enable them to secure menial jobs to sustain themselves,” he added.
