A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Child Fund Kenya, has launched a project that will create awareness among the members of the public on the importance of treating drinking water.
The project will cost a total of one million dollars and will help people in Machakos and Kitui counties.
The project is in a move to control and eradicate water related diseases like, diarrhoea, cholera and bilharzia.
Speaking to journalists during the launch of the project in Mwala district in Machakos County, chief officer in charge of loans in the NGO Patricia Nzioka, said the NGO in collaboration with water company Procter and Gamble are planning to reach out to 8100 families in the next three years.
Nzioka said Procter and Gamble will be providing water purification sachets to two households daily for the next three years for free to purify and clean and treat drinking water.
She added this will make water safe for human consumption. Officer in charge of communications of Procter and Gamble Irene Miheso said the project will reduce water related diseases by 50 per cent.
Miheso said this will help children especially those below five years attend schools more regularly as such diseases normally keep them away from school.
Water borne diseases have claimed so many lives of Kenyans and counties like Kisii are among the recent who have recorded deaths due to these diseases.
