A local non-governmental organisation in Mombasa has raised concern over the Sh556 million that was set aside by the county in its 2014-15 budget for the relocation and rehabilitation of street families from the central business district.

According to Human Rights Agenda chief executive Yusuf Lule, the population of street families had hit the 5,000 mark even as the county's inspectorate department started evicting them on Friday.

"We are alarmed by the desire by the county government to evict instead of rehabilitate street families. Where is the money set aside for the exercise?" posed Lule, as quoted in the Daily Nation.

The county head of inspectorate in Mombasa Naheed Musa said they were prevailed upon to stop the eviction by the NGO as they sought alternatives to rehabilitating the street families.

The NGO vowed to hold workshops in order to raise the matter and chat the way forward for the families.
