Three men who were workers at the collapsed storey building in Manyatta, within Kisumu city got a relief today, Monday, after two NGOs came to their rescue for specialized treatment.
The three have been admitted at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital but could not afford specialized treatment like surgery.
Dr. Hezron McObewa of Ogra Foundation and Dr Joshua Oron of Omega Foundation visited the three in the hospital and pledged to pay their full medical fees.
Dr McObewa said they will cater for the costs of the operations for the victims, and also settle their medical bill at the hospital.
“As organisations, we have stepped in to help since nobody is coming to the rescue of these young men,” he said.
Speaking at the hospital on Monday in the company of the Hospital superintendent Dr Juliana Otieno, McObewa said they will spend close to Sh150,000 for the three patients.
He said Dr Otieno had also agreed to give them some waiver in order to assist the three, who could not afford proper medical care.
“The hospital management has agreed to give us some fee waiver so that the three can get the required treatment and be discharged to be with their families,” he said.
Dr McObewa said the incident had exposed how inadequate the county is in addressing such disasters, adding that the Manyatta incident should serve as a lesson towards disaster preparedness.
The building collapsed last week injuring 15 people.
