Kisumu NGO’s have been challenged to use youths to create awareness among locals to reduce high rate of illiteracy in the region.

Kisumu County youths affairs officer Tom Otieno, speaking on Tuesday at Kisumu Polytechnic at a youthful event meant to empower the youths on high illiteracy level, challenged the NGOs to empower youths  by educating them and using them in creating awareness in the society.

He noted that by using youths to disseminate knowledge in reducing the high rate of illiteracy in the region would keep youths engaged as they love trend and following trend the youths become more enlightened.

“We need to use the skills and knowledge we have to train youths and use the knowledge the youths had acquired in training the locals to reduce the high rate of illiteracy level in the region,” said Otieno.

Peer education and awareness creation officer Joseph Omollo also emphasized on the importance of using youths to empower the locals, putting into use the acquired knowledge to promote literacy level among the locals.

He further noted that the society if empowered was bound to have high literacy level, challenging the NGO bodies to be contracting the youths to disseminate knowledge.

“The non-governmental bodies need to engage the youths in various undertaking they have, by engaging them in sensitization, mobilization and empowering,” noted Otieno.
