A body which provides oversight to global funds has warned Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other groups receiving health funds against misusing the funds.
Kenya Coordinating Mechanism (KCM) secretariat Samuel Muia said NGOs and other recipients of health funds risk being discontinued from funding if found misusing them.
Mr Muia said KCM will closely monitor how the funds are being spent in order to prevent misuse by the recipients.
“KCM will be continuously evaluating performance of grants and submitting request for continued funding to Global Fund,” said Muia.
“As KCM we are closely monitoring principal fund recipients and their sub recipients to ensure that the grant objectives are met and commend those who perform well to fund stakeholders,” said Mr Muia.
Mr Muia was speaking during a meeting to review progress made in implementation of global funds with health officials from coast counties, Red Cross and the civil society organisations at the Reef Hotel, Mombasa.
“Principal receivers of global fund grants in Kenya include the national treasury, Amref, Kenya Red Cross Society and Kenya Aids NGO Consortium,” he said.
KCM mandate is to attract funds from the Global Fund for the HIV and AIDs, tuberculosis and Malaria programmes and coordinate, monitor, evaluate and support the implementation of the Global Fund grants.
Mr Muia said that the Global Fund has provided support amounting to Sh33 billion for the year 2015 and 2017 for HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria programmes.
