Ngunjiri, speaking on the sidelines of a memorial service held at Solai ACK, told the media that the tragedy was a natural calamity and there is no need for 'blame game'.

His sentiments seemed to contradict those of Senate Security Committee which had proposed the owner of the dam that killed up to 47 people be charged.

Residents felt Ngunjiri was defending the tycoon despite there being reports that the dam had not met the required standards.

Residents swung into social media to express their anger.

"After watching and listening to media interviewing Kimani Ngujiri concerning Solai dam tragedy I felt betrayed. Sincerely, I regret that day I woke up early to vote for him," Davy Kim said.
