A night raid in Kisumu County by suspected cattle rustlers has left one person dead, with four others nursing injuries.
The raiders, who were armed with machetes and arrows, made away with two donkeys from two villages in Nyakach.
83-year-old Caleb Asoro who suffered multiple cuts on the head was taken to the Nyabondo Mission Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Asoro suffered the injuries as he tried to bar the thieves from accessing his cowshed during the Tuesday night incident.
“I had gone out for a short call, and my wife followed me and spotted two people near the fence. When I directed the spotlight at them, one quickly pounced on me,” said Mr Asoro, as quoted by the Standard.
The raiders dragged him towards the fence as his wife screamed for help.
“When I peeped through the window, I saw two men with pangas, so I got out through the back door, and by this time, other neighbours had also responded to our distress calls,” said Asoro's son, Geoffrey Odhiambo.
The raiders hit one of neighbours using a blunt object before escaping into the dark.
Area Chief Augustus Atinda who confirmed the incident said they are tracking the stolen animals.
“As we speak we are trying to recover the animals. This was an unfortunate incident but we are doing our best to restore normalcy,” said Atinda.
