The State is set to lift the ban on night travel for long distance public service vehicles (PSVs) early next month.

Transport Principal Secretary (PS) Parul Mwangi on Wednesday told Members of Parliament (MPs) that relevant authorities and the ministry had been in talks with all stakeholders in the transport sector over road safety.

Mwangi, Infrastructure PS, John Mosonik and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) boss Francis Meja were summoned before the House team led by Pokot South Member of Parliament David Pkosing to shed light on the cause of increased road carnage.

Commandant Jecinta Kinyua among other top officials from the Traffic Department were also present at the meeting.

The accidents that occurred December 2017 along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway were the reference point, as the principal secretaries and Meja were asked to show what measures they had taken to save the situation.

“We currently have 17 motor vehicle inspection centres, which are poorly equipped. We rely on visual inspection, which is highly unreliable,” Meja told the Members of Parliament.

He appealed to the committee to help the authority by enacting the Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations Bill, which the agency intends to table in Parliament through the House team.
