On Wednesday, Industralisation Cabinet Secretary Aden Mohammed fired back at his Interior counterpart over contraband sugar, which is also believed to contain deadly mercury metal.

"I will talk to my colleague (Matiang'i) about that. I don't think he ever conducted reseach before he went on public about the grave allegations," he said.

For a week now, Matiang'i has been coordinating a crackdown on illegal sugar which he stubbornly maintains that it is contaminated.

Last week, Matiang'i accused sugar barons of conducting the business which he said could affect health of millions of Kenyans.

"We are now aware of people trading with contaminated sugar. It is full of mercury and we shall deal with all those responsible," he said, with his Aden maintaining that the sugar is free of mercury.

In an interview on Wednesday, DCI George Kinoti, who has been working with Matiang'i, threatened to take Mr. Mohammed to court over the controversial sugar.

According to him, his office had carried out tests on the samples of the sugar before concluding that it was poisonous.

"I am ready to handle Mohammed in court. The sugar is contaminated and we cannot allow the lives of Kenyans to be put at risk," he added.

However, KEBS Managing Director Charles Ongwae, on Thursday seemed to vindicate Mohammed after ruling out possibilities of chemicals in the sugar.
