Nine people are feared dead after a boat they were travelling in in Lake Victoria capsized.

Eight others were rescued by fishermen and a search for the missing persons has began.

The 17, a group of local musicians based in Kisumu were heading to Ndeda Island from Lihunda Beach Bondo, Siaya County.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident through its official Twitter account.

"A boat has capsized in Lake Victoria in Bondo, near Ndeda Island. KRCS Siaya branch has activated a search and a rescue team has been dispatched," Kenya Red Cross said.
